The European Union's Entry/Exit System

Expect delays in processing times

The EU is gearing up to launch the Entry/Exit System (EES), an exciting new digital border system designed to streamline how visitors move in and out of the Schengen Area.

While the exact date hasn't been pinned down yet, we're expecting it to roll out in 2024.

When you make your first visit to the Schengen Area post-launch, you'll set up your EES registration. This involves a quick fingerprint scan and a snapshot, so plan for a bit of extra time at border control on that first go. But don't worry—once it's done, you’re good to go for three years!

And here’s a plus for families: kids under 12 will skip the fingerprint scan altogether.

Just to be on the safe side, consider packing essential items like medication in your hand luggage. This way, you're covered if there happens to be any delay.
